Beaverton Rotary’s Books for Kids: Promoting Literacy in 2024-2025

Beaverton Rotary’s Books for Kids program is celebrating another successful year of supporting literacy in the community. During the 2024–2025 school year, the initiative provided 1,277 books to 1,186 children across seven local elementary schools, helping foster a love of reading among young students.

This year’s program operated on a budget of $10,700. Funds included member and community contributions, a district matching grant and funds raised through the Beaverton Rotary Foundation Annual Auction. Volunteers were essential to the program’s success, with 18 Rotarians participating across eight school book fairs—some of which hosted multiple events.

“Our members are passionate about making sure children have access to books and literacy resources,” said John LaPlante, Rotarian and program coordinator. “It’s inspiring to see how many families we’ve been able to support.”

The Rotary Club plans to expand the program for the 2025–2026 school year by adding a eighth school to its schedule, bringing the total number of planned book fairs to eight. The expansion aims to reach even more students while maintaining the program’s commitment to literacy and community service.

Participating schools for the upcoming year include Fir Grove, Kinnaman, Aloha Huber, Chehalem, Errol Hassel, Raleigh Park, Bonnie Slope and two new schools to be announced.
